Oxygen
equipment becomes dangerous when the three elements of fire are
present. These are fuel, oxygen, and heat. These three components
create the conditions for substances to ignite. Substance such as
metal chips, dust, dirt particles, etc, will serve as fuel under
these conditions.
One issue that users of oxygen equipment should be cognizant of
is the heat of compression. A valve that is opened to quickly can
raise temperatures into the thousands of degrees. This may also
be compounded by the friction of the particles inside the oxygen
equipment. This may occur when a cylinder valve is first opened,
especially if it is opened excessively.
Fire prevention tips when using oxygen equipment:
- Handle oxygen cylinders carefully
- Use a purpose-built trolley to move them
- Keep cylinders chained or clamped to prevent them from tipping
- Store oxygen cylinders when not in use in a well-ventilated
storage area or compound
- Keep fire extinguishers nearby
