| Liquid oxygen, which is also known as LOX or Lox in the gas market, is the liquid form of oxygen. Liquid oxygen is known as a type of industrial gas. Liquid oxygen is also used for many industrial and medical applications. Through a process known as fractional distillation, liquid oxygen is produced from the oxygen found naturally in the air. Because of liquid oxygen's cryogenic nature, it can cause materials that it comes into contact with to become very brittle; therefore, it must be contained in thermally insulated tanks. For medical use, the cold liquid is brought to a boil which alters the liquid oxygen back into it's original gaseous form. Liquid oxygen tanks must always be refilled by licensed professionals. |
